Annia: It's hard to believe you are writing so well and not yet old enough to vote.
I went into the US Army at your age because I, too, wanted to be a writer and figured the army experience would give me something worthwhile to write about.
It also gave me time when we weren't drilling or in class or on the rifle range to read the work of many other writers. I still read every day. You should do it, too.
After the army, I lucked into a newspaper job and spend the next 60 years reporting, writing, editing, coaching other writers and teaching college students to write.
It has been a wonderful life.
I encourage you to:
1. Write every day. Set a goal and stick to it. I'm in my 80s and still write every day.
2. Seize every opportunity that comes your way. Journalism took me to Washington, New York, California, Ukraine, the Middle East and other foreign shores where fascinating people became friends. It also introduced me to my wife, an excellent writer and editor who proof reads my stuff.
3. Develop a thick skin and fighting spirit. Always think positively. You will experience your share of disappointments, rejections, editors who need a course in bedside manner 101, etc.
Illegitimi non carborundum. They will try to grind you down. But you have already discovered your purpose in life. You are way ahead of most people. Be grateful. Exercise your gifts for your readers.

Thanks so much for reading! This is one of those thoughts that nags at us constantly as writers. I love that you are talking about it in a writing workshop!

Thank you for writing this! I just bumped up against this recently in a writer’s workshop. We shared our work and comparison crept in. I love what you wrote about not writing for everyone and writing for change. You are a blessing-keep on writing! Thanks again!
