News Article

Sam Olson never set out to own a hardware store in rural western South Dakota.
In fact, when Buffalo Hardware came up for sale in 2014, he was in his final year of pursuing a business degree at Black Hills State University.

Little did he know that, nine years later, he would own five businesses in his hometown of Buffalo and be named Retailer of the Year by the South Dakota Retailers Association for his own Buffalo Hardware.

Business/Inspirational Book

I vividly remember standing on the back seat of my dad’s car, leaning onto the headrest of the front passenger seat. It was dark outside, well past the time any young child should be outside of the house. I was wearing zip-up fleece pajamas with white pleather foot covers. It was 1984, and I must have been 3, maybe 4 years old. My middle sister, who was two years older than me, was sitting next to me, and my oldest sister, four years older than me, sat in the front passsenger seat.

We were waiting for my dad to come out of a nearby house. None of us recognized where we were. We had been in the car for what felt like a long time, and with every minute that passed we became more afraid.

Life Story

Everybody knows what I do. But most people don’t really know who I am. -Scott Jacobs

Welcome to the world of Scott Jacobs, a world of visions where the smallest moment can create the greatest impact on canvas.

Imagine sitting with your family at dinner. There is a wine glass on the table, half filled with a dark red wine.

Perhaps there is conversation about what the day entailed, kids at school, an upcoming weekend event. But then the father leans over closer to his daughter, points at the wine glass and asks, “How would you paint that?”

A side conversation between father and daughter ensues, about light and shadow, about color and texture. For a moment, they are in their own world — a world where the smallest detail is the biggest focus, and where beauty exists in a single smudge.

It’s not often that a person notices detail in the mundane. But Scott Jacobs has always been about just that — bringing out the extraordinary in the ordinary. Imagine a painting of an old motorcycle where the rust appears real. Or the chrome on a bike that shines, almost as if you could catch your own reflection in it.

This book charts the stunning (and even unlikely) path of Scott Jacobs’ life and art, a curious intermingling of early hardship and wild creativity, phenomenal success and bold steps, hard work and momentous discoveries. It is a journey best told by milestones — some greater than others, but all significant — that propelled Scott to the limelight in which he lives and works today.

*BOOK’S PROJECTED PUBLICATION DATE EARLY 2025*
